Let’s Eat Healthier

Measure Up Marion is working to make healthy living easier and more affordable for Marion County residents where we live, learn, work, worship and play. Easy access to healthy foods and beverages, as well as knowing what a healthy food choice is, are important steps in leading a healthy life.

We often want to eat better but healthy options aren’t always easy to find and we don’t always know which foods are healthy.

To make a difference in our community we are:

  • Making it easier to find healthier food and drink options in vending machines, at concession stands, in neighborhood grocery stores, on faith community campuses and at restaurants
  • Teaching children in after-school and summer programs how to identify healthy foods and drinks and how to make a healthy snack
  • Enabling farmers markets to accept all forms of payment so everyone can afford fresh fruits and vegetables

In addition to healthier foods, we are helping to focus on healthier drinks, particularly substituting sugar-sweetened drinks with water and other healthy options. “Drinking your calories” is not a healthy choice, particularly for children.

Sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soft drinks, sugary fruit juice drinks and even “fitness drinks” can add hundreds of calories every day. Those calories, according to nutrition experts, would be better consumed as fruit and vegetables.
